i'd definitely p/u a clymer's manual if i were you (i know my local shop has them). oil plug on my 99 is underneath left side of crankcase and sits recessed horizontally. it's a 14mm bolt on mine (although i think my clymer's for the 86 says 17mm). oil filter and o-ring (accessed right side of crankcase - 'triangular' case cover) runs less than 6 dollars. 2 quarts oil of choice (think i'm running penzoil 20/40 now). the manual will help you out with pretty much all routine maintenance (brakes, oil, fuse, lights, etc.). ride safe!
